BRUCE comes to the PNC

by URSULA

From the moment I bought my Bruce tickets, I have been anticipating this concert. I love concerts at the Arts Center to begin with and to get to see Bruce play there…wow, made it even better! Going to a Bruce show has been a family event the last few times I've seen him. We listen to music on the way up, we tailgate, we dance around, we watch the show and we buzz on the way home. This show did not let me down one bit.

I had been familiar with Pete Seeger by listening to this amazing children's folk CD when I was younger. I LOVED it. I would sing along with my dad. So I knew who Pete Seeger was and was looking forward to hearing what Bruce put together for this show. I grew up around folk music and classic rock so I was excited. Rumors started flying as soon as this tour was announced and reviews started coming in when Bruce and band played their rehearsal shows at Convention Hall a few months ago. The reviews were fantastic which made me even MORE excited!

My family and I tailgated then sat on the lawn with Jamie (Legs) and her fam. I was so scared it was going to rain but the blue skies came through in the end. We all walked onto the lawn and camped out at about 6pm. At 8:32pm the lights dimmed and Bruce came out to a cheering hometown crowd along with about 19 other musicians! The band he pulled together was quite amazing. There were trumpets, tubas and trombones, a slide guitar and banjo, and even someone playing the washboard! He opened with American Land, moved onto John Henry then sang O Mary Don't You Weep. All of these songs were old, old folk/southern songs but can I tell you! I barely sat down the whole show! Forgive me for sounding like an old fart but we had a knee-slapping good time! It was like the whole lawn was at a ho-down and Bruce was the Caller. We had to be careful dancing on the lawn though because there were mud pits everywhere! We counted about 5 people falling right in front of us. It was classic. Bruce did sprinkle in a few of his own songs - Atlantic City and Devils & Dust and encored with another one of his own and a favorite of mine - My City of Ruin. Bruce played until about 11:15 and closed with Man on the Flying Trapeze. Who knew I would ever hear Bruce Springsteen play a silly song about the circus! Awesome.

I know there were a lot of people out there that were surprised at the concert and what it ended up being, but I was extremely pleased and had a great time. Bruce made it all about the music…nothing to do with his celebrity or what he has done in the past. He had a great time up on stage and you could tell. There was this energy being exuded from that stage that you couldn't deny. It was intoxicating and it just made you dance and sing along!
