An open letter to Steve miller:

Dear Steve;

Nobody calls you the space cowboy.
Please do not rhyme "What the facts is" with "Other peoples taxes"
Pompitus is not a word.

Thank you,
Johnny

SUMMER 2006 IS UPON US

Another summer has come upon us here at the Jersey Shore. It is that time for the return of all the bennies and the time for all the craziness that living at the Shore can bring. Here at ModernDJ.com, we have plenty of options for every day of the week.

On Mondays, O'Neills, located on Main Street in Manasquan has their infamous Mug Night with DJ Dave and DJ OD. There are $2 Miller Lites and $5 Mug Refills, using the O'Neills Mugs or bring your own.

On Tuesdays, Bar A, located on 16th Street in Lake Como, continues to be the hottest night on the planet. Join hundreds of others enjoying Beat the Clock Miller Lites and music by DJ Dave and Lifespeed. Another alternative for all the bar pong enthusiasts is O'Neills, of Manasquan, where there is a tournament every week hosted by DJ Chris.

On Wednesdays, Ceegees, located in Brook Plaza in Jackson, offers beat the clock Miller Pints, tons of giveaways, and the hip-hop styles of DJ Dave. Another can't miss night is Chevys, of Bricktown, which has $2 Domestics and $2 House Margaritas with the hip hop selections of DJ Chris. And for the bingo enthusiasts, come check out DJ Rob B. at the Clam Hut, located in the Highlands. There are Miller giveaways and Miller specials.

On Thursdays, O'Neills, of Manasquan, offers its one of a kind Plinko and Mountain Climber Game for big prizes. With $1 Coors Lights and a different liquor promo every week, DJ Dave spins and hosts this wild game night. Another alternative is the Tropical Pub, on 13th Ave in Belmar, where DJ Chris spins and there are $1 Nips all night.

On Fridays, O'Neills, of Manasquan, offers the music of DJ Dave and a $2.50 Coors Light Bottles special. Another alternative is CeeGees, of Jackson, where there is $6 Domestic and $9 Import Pitchers with the 80s, and rock stylings of DJ Scotty.

On Saturdays, it all starts with Bar A, located in Lake Como, where every Sat Afternoon is the college reunion beach party with DJ Dave and MC Jamil, starting at 4. Then, head over to O'Neills, of Manasquan, or Connolly Station, located on 8th and Main in Belmar, to listen to the stylings of DJ Dave. In the Long Branch area, check out Giannis, where you can find DJ Rob B. or DJ Frankie Mess spinning in this upper-class lounge. The RiverHouse, of Brielle, offers the experience of DJ Mike Nice and DJ Rocco while The Manor, located on Rt. 71 in Spring Lake Heights, offers Bacardi specials and the music of DJ Chris.

HIS NAME is EARL

As a rule, I don't like sit-coms. The sad truth is that I have done ample research, watching hour after hour (or, more accurately, half-hour after half-hour) of sit-com. I don't like the standard formula shows (one character screws up, and rather than fessing up she or he creates an elaborate deception that keeps growing and growing until it blows up; multiple misunderstandings coincide until eventually a normally sane adult ends up hiding in a closet; two lead characters have a romance, break up and get together some number of times only to eventually end up together; and so on…). I don't like the standard themes (lead male character is always wrong; the most hateful and self-serving character will, when called on to make a great sacrifice, show his true colors by doing the right thing…). I often find that these shows leave me feeling insulted or even angry.
"My Name is Earl" has redeemed the genre of Situational comedy for me.
At first glance, the show is just another stupid sit-com. Since it made me laugh and didn't piss me off, I gave My Name is Earl another chance. As I watched it began to dawn on me that this was not just a situational comedy, it was (dun-dun-DUN): edutainment; the highest form of learning. Earl is actually a tutorial on how to be in synch with the world around you.
The show is about (you guessed it) Earl. Earl has led a rough life in which he has done more than his share of bad, even felonious, things. He is led to the epiphany that his treatment of others has generated bad karma. In order to fix his karma, he makes a list of everything bad he has done and sets out, one item at a time, to correct his transgressions and square himself with karma.
The true genius of "My Name is Earl" is brought to life by the character of Randy, Earl's brother and accomplice. At first Randy seems to be typical TV fat dumb comic relief guy. Further review shows Randy to be so much more than that (also, so much less). For, while Earl is a student of karma, Randy embodies Zen perfection. Randy exists entirely in the moment. He is never at odds with his environment. He flows through life like water through a ravine. The true cleverness of the writers is that the relationship between Zen master and student is so harmonious that neither is aware that the tutelage is occurring. What better way is there to learn. This way neither the ego of the student nor the teacher can interfere with the learning process.
Whether you want to laugh at the antics that define modern TV, or move one step closer to Nirvana, this show is the one to watch.
