HIS NAME is EARL

As a rule, I don't like sit-coms. The sad truth
is that I have done ample research, watching hour after hour (or,
more accurately, half-hour after half-hour) of sit-com. I don't
like the standard formula shows (one character screws up, and
rather than fessing up she or he creates an elaborate deception
that keeps growing and growing until it blows up; multiple misunderstandings
coincide until eventually a normally sane adult ends up hiding
in a closet; two lead characters have a romance, break up and
get together some number of times only to eventually end up together;
and so on
). I don't like the standard themes (lead male
character is always wrong; the most hateful and self-serving character
will, when called on to make a great sacrifice, show his true
colors by doing the right thing
). I often find that these
shows leave me feeling insulted or even angry.
"My Name is Earl" has redeemed the genre of Situational
comedy for me.
At first glance, the show is just another stupid sit-com. Since
it made me laugh and didn't piss me off, I gave My Name is Earl
another chance. As I watched it began to dawn on me that this
was not just a situational comedy, it was (dun-dun-DUN): edutainment;
the highest form of learning. Earl is actually a tutorial on how
to be in synch with the world around you.
The show is about (you guessed it) Earl. Earl has led a rough
life in which he has done more than his share of bad, even felonious,
things. He is led to the epiphany that his treatment of others
has generated bad karma. In order to fix his karma, he makes a
list of everything bad he has done and sets out, one item at a
time, to correct his transgressions and square himself with karma.
The true genius of "My Name is Earl" is brought to life
by the character of Randy, Earl's brother and accomplice. At first
Randy seems to be typical TV fat dumb comic relief guy. Further
review shows Randy to be so much more than that (also, so much
less). For, while Earl is a student of karma, Randy embodies Zen
perfection. Randy exists entirely in the moment. He is never at
odds with his environment. He flows through life like water through
a ravine. The true cleverness of the writers is that the relationship
between Zen master and student is so harmonious that neither is
aware that the tutelage is occurring. What better way is there
to learn. This way neither the ego of the student nor the teacher
can interfere with the learning process.
Whether you want to laugh at the antics that define modern TV,
or move one step closer to Nirvana, this show is the one to watch.
