Cinqo De Mayo: Quick History
Lesson
by Jay
Every year on the 5th of May many of us clear our schedules to
celebrate Cinqo De Mayo. With drinks in hand, and for some of
us the celebratory sombrero headgear or festive pancho,we go out
with our friends and party it up and have a great time. This year's
bus run was a blast, we hit up Chevy's in Brick, Bar A, Headliner,
and then somewhere in the mix even made it over for a pitstop
at Taco Bell.
I realized that I really don't know much about the holiday I
look forward to every year, so I decided to do some research.
While trying to think of a topic, I was inspired by a Cinqo Bus
Run Photo that make me wonder, what exactly do the Mexican flag
colors represent, so I did a bit of research and found:
The colors of the flag originated from the banner of the Army
of the Three Guarantees, which lasted from 1821 until 1823. Originally,
the colors had the following meanings:
Green: (independence from Spain)
White: (religion, the Roman Catholic faith)
Red: (union between the Europeans and Americans)
The World Encyclopedia of Flags also gives the following meaning
to the colors of the flag:
" Green: Hope
" White: Purity
" Red: Religion
Well there ya have, now next time you are out partaking in Cinqo
De Mayo festivities, be appreciative of the colors of the flag,
and those who wear them so well!
