ABBIE the RED HOT MOLLY

>What got you into music?
I think my genes did! I've always been a huge
music fan and a musician of one sort or another. My father is
a jazz musician and my mother is a huge fan of bluegrass.
>How long you been doing the original
music thing? I picked up a guitar
in 1997 and songs started popping out about a week after I learned
my first chord (E7). I learned how to play CC Rider from page
one of a "how to play blues guitar" book. Then I stole
the chords and made my own song!
>Are you folksie in everything you do?
Well, that depends what you mean by folksie...
I shower regularly and shave things that need shaving, so I
guess I'm no hippie, but I do like talking animals on TV. That
just cracks me up!!
>Where do you see red molly going in
the next 5 years? All the way, hopefully.
I want to open for Allison Krauss and do a tour with Bonnie
Raitt, hopefully get both of those gals to cover one of my songs!
Oh and if this is a wish list, I'd also like to meet Jerry Douglas
(he's just the best Dobro player in the world). Well to be honest,
I could be playing gigs at libraries for the next 10 years and
I'd still be happy. As long as I get to play and eventually
make that my main job in life.
>You wanna write gleny.com's next themesong?
OK- how's this... Gleny gleny bo-beny bannanna
fanna fo feny... that's all I have right now but I'll work on
it. >Because you are a musician, do
you hear and see music all over, like at
>the mall, or the grocery? Well, I
notice music and hear things a little differently than some
of my friends. I listen for the arrangements of songs and look
for what makes a great song work- maybe a nice melody or a rhythmic
thing, a cool bass line or really catchy lyrics. I like finding
cool rhythms in heavy metals songs and putting them into bluegrass.
>Where did the name come from? ho
is 'red molly'? Ok well, it's a accidental
homage to Richard Thompson, who wrote a song called 1952 Vincent
Black Lightning in which female character is named Red Molly.
Her boyfriend dies and leaves her his motorcycle- not bad! It's
a song that's been covered by rock artists and bluegrass artists
alike, which is why it fits us. Anyway, the name came from a
combination of my love for the spunky color and the sweetness
of a little girl named Molly, who I met on the subway in NYC.
>Do you guys have a big lesbian following?
Hmm, I don't know. How do we go about getting one of those?
:)
>How do you describe RED MOLLY's sound?
We're a little country, a little rock and roll, as cliche as
that sounds! We play rootsy, bluegrassy tunes with 3-part harmonies,
banjo, driving guitar, and Dobro. But then we also do some Western
Swing, some classic "Elvis meets Hank Williams," and
some modern Folk like Patti Griffin. >So,
male groupies... what's the scoop?
Yes, please send them. Thank you. >You
guys did a nude calendar shoot. How long did it take to talk
everyone into that? What was it like?
We were psyched actually. It was the most fun we've ever had
during a photo shoot! I think every band should do it.
>Tell me about the live album Red Molly has
coming out.
Well, we recorded it in December 2005 at Bennett Studios in
Englewood, NJ. We invited about 50 people from our mailing list
into the studio and recorded everything live. It was an exhausting
day, but SO worth
it. Normally bands take months recording an album one instrument
at a time, but we got a whole album in one day. We are mixing
it right now, balancing things and adding a couple of studio
tracks to it. The CD should be out in June. >You
have written some original songs for Red Molly. Any chance of
you guys
>writing songs together?
We've been so busy that we haven't had the chance, but it certainly
could happen. It's hard enough to write a song alone, though,
I can't even imagine how we'd do it together! We have tons of
fun arranging songs, though. Taking them apart and making the
story come through with dynamics, different harmonies, breaks
and a cappella parts.

On the morning of May 5, 1862, 4000 Mexican troops
smashed the aggressive French modern army twice its size at Puebla,
Mexico.
The French, Spanish, and English landed in Mexico
five months earlier on the pretext of collecting debts. The Spanish
and the English had left but France, who detested the U.S. (that
was in the middle of the Civil War and could not help Mexico),
wanted to take advantage to get a stronghold in the Americas.
The French were defeated by the Mexicans using
strong strategy and European predictability. By winning this battle,
the Mexicans kept Napoleon III from supplying the confederate
rebels for another year, allowing the Union to defeat the South
and build the greatest army the world had ever seen. Just 14 months
later, Union had its great victory at Gettysburg.
Thus, the 5th of May is not Mexican Independence
Day, (Mexico declared its independence on the 15th of September,
1810) and is not an American Holiday but maybe it should be.
Mexicans, you see, never forget who their friends
are and neither do Americans. That is why Cinco De Mayo is such
a party, a party which celebrates freedom and liberty. These are
two ideals that Mexico and America have always fought to protect.
So

When you walk into 507, you feel casual
and comfortable. The bar is a deep mahogany wood and big
screen TVs line the wall. During the week, the brick oven
pizza is baking and the mellow background music makes 507
inviting. On the weekends, Five-Oh-Heaven is just that -
HEAVEN! The DJ pumps out the dance and pop music in the
front room while the back bar is packed with band groupies
who want to sing along to their favorite Dave songs with
Pat Roddy or groove to the Reggae sounds of Indian Summer.
507 is a local bar where you'll find college
kids or the young professional who wants to let loose on
the weekends. In 507's casual dining environment, you can
have a glass of wine and appetizers while chatting with
your friends without having to yell over music. Or you can
hang out to watch the game while having a pint of Blue Moon
with your buddies. At night, the type of crowd at 507 is
much more inviting that people you will come across at Bar
A or Headliner during the summer.
